If this isn’t the first time you’ve clogged the toilet with paper, you may be using too much. But how do you know exactly how much toilet paper to use?

How Much Toilet Paper Should You Use? How Much Is Too Much?

Is there such a thing as flushing too much toilet paper? Yes. Is there an exact amount that can or has been measured as too much? No.

On average, most people use anywhere between 4 and 10 squares of toilet paper per flush. Even if you were to double that amount, toilet paper is meant to dissolve quickly, and should still easily flush down your toilet. That being said, using an excessive amount of toilet paper (such as 1/3rd to an entire roll) can quickly lead to a clogged or even a damaged toilet.

What Happens if You Flush Too Much Toilet Paper?

The consequence of flushing too much toilet paper is likely just needing to flush twice. However, there are some issues in which flushing too much can lead to a bigger problem.

For example:

  • An already clogged pipe can become more clogged.
  • Repeatedly flushing too much can result in a backup.
  • An old toilet may overflow or break.
  • A low-flow toilet doesn’t have high enough pressure to handle a larger mass of toilet paper.
  • Debris-filled or rusted pipes may cause toilet paper to become more easily stuck.

Can Too Much Toilet Paper Clog a Toilet?

Yes. Flushing too much at once may result in a clog, especially if there’s already dirt and debris buildup in your pipes. A large amount of toilet paper may not be able to properly dissolve and therefore remain stuck in front of a larger clog or buildup.

If you find that someone has accidentally flushed too much toilet paper, the first thing to do is try to unclog the toilet with a plunger.

Can Too Much Toilet Paper Clog a Sewer Line?

Yes. If the clog moves past your drain, it can get stuck in your sewer line if debris or old pipes stop it from moving along or breaking up.

If you suspect too much toilet paper is trapped in your sewer line, don’t expect or wait for it to clear. Doing so could result in dangerous sewage backup in your home. Instead, call a plumbing professional right away for sewer services.

Will Toilet Paper Dissolve in a Clogged Toilet?

It depends on how severe the clog is and the condition of your toilet and drain. Damage or debris buildup in your toilet or drain can prevent the clog from properly dissolving. If a standard plunger and proper plunging technique don’t clear the clog, try dissolving it next.

How to Dissolve a Toilet Paper Clog

When a plunger isn’t clearing a toilet paper clog, a natural solution can help break up and dissolve it. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the bowl.
  2. Add 1 cup of vinegar.
  3. Pour 4 cups of boiling water in last (careful of splashing or spilling)!
  4. Wait 15-20 minutes for the solution to set.
  5. Flush the toilet.
  6. Finally, how long does it take for toilet paper to dissolve? Usually, another 10-15 minutes is enough time for it to dissipate.

If this still doesn’t do the trick, it’s time to call a plumbing professional for toilet services.
